The containment doors can be triggered manually from the control center console. The operator triggered them manually.
Every door. Every spoke. Every junction between the rings. The workers inside the main coil were sealed in. The monitoring stations were sealed out. The control center was sealed from both.
The operator initiated a purge cycle.
A purge vents the main coil — forces the accumulated void energy through the accelerator ring and out through the void windows. It is a maintenance procedure. It is performed when the coil is empty. The procedure requires three steps, each with a long delay. The delays are deliberate.
The operator completed all three steps. He waited through each delay. His hands moved on the console with the sureness of a man who had performed the procedure many times. He was still mouthing the number when the coil ignited.
The workers inside the coil were doing the ordinary work of keeping a vast machine running. One was halfway through a seal repair with her tools spread on the floor. Others were on ladders, in the thaumaturgy lab, along the binding ring, in the accelerator corridors.
Some of them ran for the spoke junctions and found them locked. Some tried the emergency overrides and found them disabled. Some stood still. The coil is a closed loop.
What the energy does to void matter is controlled. What it does to a body is displacement. It passes through flesh as though the flesh is not there. What remains is an outline — a space where a person was, holding the shape for a moment before the air fills it in.
Testimony. Survivor two, west power station.
"I saw him through the port. He was calm.
The coil fired. The walls shook. The containment ring flared white, then violet. Through the void windows I could see it moving through the main coil. I could see the technicians on the far side. I could see them for about two seconds. Then I could see through them. Then I could see the wall behind where they had been standing.
I looked at the operator. He was still sitting. His lips were still moving. He turned and looked at us through the ports and his expression was confused. He could see us shouting. He could see us hammering on the glass. The control center is soundproofed.
He mouthed something. I think it was the number."
